El Paso County officials warn of possible roofing scams

Bernal said in a news release that the recent stormy weather has created a breeding ground for "storm chasers," or fly-by-night roofing contractors who go door-to-door offering their services at low prices, or offering new roofs to be paid entirely by insurance companies.
"Most established roofing companies are trustworthy and professional," Bernal said in the news release. "Consumers should be wary of an offer that sounds too good to be true -- it probably is."
Bernal offered the following recommendations for residents in need of roof repairs:
--Hire only licensed or bonded contractors.
--Don't be rushed into signing any contractor, especially if the contractor uses high-pressure sales tactics such as "today-only" discounts.
--Always sign a detailed contract for the project, and get terms and any warranties in writing.
--Do you homework before hiring a contractor. Get more than one estimate, ask for references and search online for complaints that may have been filed against the company. Companies can be researched via the
--Never make full payment of the project up front. There are times when a contractor will ask for a 50 percent deposit, depending on the project, price and/or special orders for materials.
