CTC, teachers make progress on contract

Teachers, who are in their second year of working under an expired contract, had authorized the union to call a strike if needed. In a negotiation session Wednesday, the sides made more progress "than the last 22 months," union President
"I'm hopeful, but I can't really celebrate yet," she said.
School officials also said they were optimistic about the progress made this week. Both sides expect an agreement to be reached next week.
Last month, the 29-member union rejected the state fact-finding report that included raises of either 2 percent or 2.5 percent each year and called for teachers to pay for part of their insurance premiums during the third year of the contract.
The joint operating committee accepted the report.
If both sides accepted the report, it would have become the basis for a new contract. Teachers said they rejected the report because they want tuition reimbursement for teachers who have not yet received permanent certification.
