Durham Family Theatre in a ‘drive to survive’

All of the theater's summer workshops sold out this summer, but that enrollment was not enough to ensure stability as the fifth season begins.
Justice co-founded the theater with
"That is what our mission is, but it has a financial consequence," Justice said.
The theater is reaching out to the community for help, and strengthening its fundraising abilities. The organization will hire an executive director whose purview will be fundraising, Justice said. Justice will remain artistic director but focus more on writing grants (two are in the works, she said).
The establishment of the executive director post is crucial for the theater to move forward, said Ute Wittman Pair, board member and treasurer. All board members have their own lives and jobs, and Justice "is taking on everything, from the production side, to the technical side, the administrative side, and that is truly remarkable. It is all on her," Wittman Pair said. More focused fundraising and grant writing should help it get more of a foothold in the community, she said.
