Turner, who prior to Jonse served several terms as mayor, said Shanks had been a hard worker and -- at one point -- consistently worked 12-hour days. Asked whether his positive impression of Shanks as an employee meant that Shanks had been fired for personal reasons, Turner declined to comment.
