The outpatient surgery center works in conjunction with the family health center and allows patients to spend a short amount of time recovering at the center, then return to their home. A broad range of general and specialty surgical consultation and treatment is offered, including endoscopy, breast biopsies and surgeries, hernia repair, vascular surgery, gynecology and urology. For adult patients with foot and ankle problems, podiatric specialists provide comprehensive diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. Wooster FHC/ASC has open access for GI endoscopy. This allows patients to be directly referred for colonoscopy procedures by their primary care physician. This process removes the need for a gastroenterology referral appointment.

Many low to moderate-paying jobs are offering "skinny" insurance plans that cover the ACA requirement for the employee to have insurance (the "Individual Mandate"), but don't even meet the minimum provisions of the law. These plans might cover preventative services, but nothing else. This is legal under the new laws as long as the employer also offers an option that meets the minimum plan requirements.
Parsons said, "These plans are cheap and they shield people from the penalty imposed by the ACA individual mandate, but they really don't help if the person gets sick or has a chronic disease. The other plan offered by their employer is more expensive and they can't afford the monthly premium. They really are between a rock and a hard place."

If you're going to have a STEMI -- and you probably actually don't want to do that --
STEMI -- a medical acronym for segment elevated cardio myoloma infarction -- is an acute heart attack that demands the patient get to a catheterization laboratory as quickly as possible. Since neither Aultman Orrville nor
Josefczyk said that STEMIs typically present in patients 40 and older as severe chest pain, usually caused by a completely blocked or severely blocked artery. That patient, Josefczyk said, typically has a short window of time to get to a cath lab where a balloon catheter, followed by the implanting of a stent, is used to open the artery and keep it open.
Josefczyk said that if the STEMI is identified at Aultman Orrville, the patient has a "door-to-door-to-balloon time" (

"There is a benefit for stopping at a local hospital," Campensa said. "It can help stabilize the patient through medication, get them oxygen and help control the pain."
Campensa said far too many people do not take chest pains seriously enough. "You have to treat every chest pain like it's something." he said.
Josefczyk said that Aultman employees at every level are trained to recognize symptoms of a cardiac event and react quickly. She noted that on the morning of the interview, a man had arrived at Aultman Orrville and an Aultman security guard recognized that he was suffering a cardiac incident. The security guard quickly got the man into the hospital and to the STEMI center where the staff summoned a local ambulance service, which whisked the man to
"I'm really proud of the staff," said Josefczyk. "They're trained to react very quickly in this kind of incident. It's a smooth process."

Campensa said because of the merger, Aultman Orrville has an increased cardiology and pulmonary presence, with cardiology specialists now taking appointments through the hospital.

Some of the requirements for CAH certification include having no more than 25 inpatient beds; maintaining an annual average length of stay of no more than 96 hours for acute inpatient care; offering 24- hour, 7-day-a-week emergency care; and being located in a rural area. The limited size and short stay length allowed to CAHs encourage a focus on providing outstanding care for common conditions and outpatient care, while referring other conditions to larger hospitals.
Patient rooms are configured to ensure caring for the patient is made easier and safer for patients, families and caregivers.
