The "Healthiest Companies in America" award is given to organizations across the nation that attained a company-wide low health risk status while achieving high employee participation in their wellness program.
About 65 percent, or about 900 of the hospital's 1,400 employees, who are eligible for health care benefits take part in the voluntary wellness initiative designed to make employees healthier while controlling health insurance costs, according to
Employees who participate get a reduction in their health insurance rates, Maras said.
"We encourage all our employees to do it," Maras said. "It's a good way to know and have a baseline of their health conditions."
"It also provides early detection of health conditions like cancer or diabetes," Maras said. "That helps minimize not only the impact on monetary costs, but time away from work and the emotional cost on an employee."
