Aug. 25--WATERLOO -- Bond has been set at $100,000 for a Waterloo man who was found with a gun minutes after a slaying outside a Waterloo bar.
Black Hawk County sheriff's deputies discovered a semi-automatic pistol after pulling over 36-year-old Rodolfo Gonzales Pena.
Gonzales was stopped about a block away from El Senor Tequila Nightclub on East 11th Street where Celio Antonio Posada, 35, of Minneapolis, was shot and killed.
No arrests have been made in connection with the homicide, and Waterloo police continue to investigate what took place in the moments leading up to Posada's death.
"We're still not sure what instigated the whole thing," said Lt. Michael McNamee with the Waterloo Police Department.
He said investigators haven't determined if Posada and the gunman knew each other. Posada, his girlfriend and the gunman had been inside the nightclub that night, but there were no indications of an argument taking place inside, McNamee said. He said the only other people in the establishment were employees.
Posada was shot in the parking lot outside El Senor Tequila at about 12:15 a.m. Saturday. He suffered two bullet wounds and died at the scene, police said. McNamee said officers believe a handgun was used.
Minutes later, a deputy spotted a vehicle passing through the 1300 block of Lafayette Street without headlights. Gonzales was driving, and the deputy determined his license had been suspended for a lack of insurance, according to court records.
Deputies detained Gonzales on driving charges and then found a loaded Ruger handgun tucked between the driver's seat and the passenger seat, court records state. He was arrested for carry weapons, a misdemeanor charge.
Posada's death is the second homicide in Waterloo this year.
Gary Wilson, 27, of Waterloo was shot and killed outside a Jackson Street home in the early morning hours of Aug. 2. No arrests have been made in the slaying. The manner of death is still pending for Dennis Washburn, 69, who was found unconscious with head and neck injuries May 26 and died June 4.
