Aug. 24--NORMAL -- Sam Judah drove in four runs and the Normal CornBelters scored five times in the first inning Saturday on the way to a 10-4 Frontier League win over the Traverse City Beach Bums at The Corn Crib.
The early offense aided starter Mike Devine (3-4), who picked up his second victory in three decisions with Normal by allowing four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts in six innings. The Belters improved to 44-41 with their ninth win in 11 games.
The Belters batted around in the first inning against Beach Bums starter Rusty Shellhorn (4-5), scoring on an error, a wild pitch, an RBI single by Aaron Dudley and a two-run hit by Jhiomar Veras. Judah's two-out RBI double in the second widened the margin to 6-0.
Jake Rhodes' solo homer got Traverse City on the board in the third before Judah made it 9-1 with a three-run double inside the right field line in the sixth.
The Bums loaded the bases in the seventh before pushing across three on a Sean Gusrang single, a ground out and a sacrifice fly. Dudley drove in an insurance run for the Belters in the eighth.
Mike Schwartz had three hits to lead the Belters' 15-hit attack. Shellhorn allowed six runs on seven hits in three innings.
The series concludes with a 6 p.m. game Sunday with Normal'sCullen Babin (6-6, 4.38) opposing Traverse City's Scott Vachon (2-2, 4.46).
