March gladness: Popular Treefort to return

But one important organization has never made a dime from the festival: the company that runs it.

Shandro said she could not afford to keep subsidizing Treefort by herself. "I was at the end of what I could do," she said. So she brought in new co-owners, including a money manager and a well-known local fundraiser, to lessen Shandro's risk and boost Treefort's chances of profitability.
"I wanted to start something that can last forever," she said Wednesday. "This thing could live on its own without me now."

Schert is also a visiting artist and social entrepreneur at the
Treefort Music Fest is applying to change its legal status from a limited liability corporation to a certified B corporation, whose articles of incorporation and bylaws authorize the corporate board to consider social and other factors besides shareholder interests when making decisions.
Both new partners support Treefort's desire to put people and the environment over profit, Gilbert said.
"Making money was always an afterthought," Gilbert said. "That's still the case."
