Today it seems that anyone can use the title of "financial planner." The truth is that only those who have fulfilled the rigorous certification and renewal requirements set by the CFP Board can display the CFP® certification trademarks which represent a high level of expertise, ethics and professionalism. CFPs must also adhere to a strict code of professional conduct and ethics. This code of ethics embodies six principles: integrity, objectivity, competence, fairness, confidentiality, professionalism, and diligence. CFPs who violate these principles are subject to disciplinary action which can include the loss of the license.
As stated by the CFP Board of Standards, "CFP® professionals must report 30 hours of CE each reporting period. This period is the same as the certification period, a two-year period ending with the last day of the certificant's renewal month. A newly-certified CFP® professionals' initial Continuing Education (CE) requirement is prorated for the period from initial certification to the end of the initial certification period. Credit must be earned from programs that cover the financial planning topics in CFP Board's Job Task Domains or Principal Topics. Two of the 30 hours must be earned from a pre-approved CFP Board Ethics CE program. The other 28 hours may be earned in one or more of the accepted topics."
