Nine people were killed statewide last year in 1,596 crashes in construction zones, according to the DOT. That's up from six killed in 2012 and seven in 2011. Fourteen people were killed in construction zones in 2010, six in 2009 and eight in 2008, according to DOT statistics.
Construction zones can be dangerous for drivers and workers. The DOT warns drivers to eliminate distractions such as eating, drinking and cellphone use while navigating construction areas.
Drivers should also slow down, allow for at least three seconds of braking distance and expect reduced speed limits, changing traffic lanes and construction vehicles.
