The victim told police it was not until a friend noticed that her online beau was flagged as a prolific Internet scammer with numerous aliases that the victim realized she had been duped, Clark said.
"From a safety standpoint, never ever ever wire money to anybody, under any circumstances," Clark said. "There's no way to track the individual. Plus, if it's international, now you're dealing with international law."
Clark said there are plenty of other more secure methods of sending funds, though he recommended watching out for requests or demands for money that include unusual threats or stories of woe.
