Honoring the 166th Anniversary of the Women’s Rights Convention at Seneca Falls

166 years ago today hundreds of women gathered in
Modeled after the Declaration of Independence, this revolutionary resolution was drafted and signed primarily by women. They rallied around the idea that women should have a voice in the laws to which they are compelled and that all citizens, male or female, should have equality in representation, employment and wages, property, education, leadership in government, and religion.
We have made tremendous progress since that day 166 years ago, but we must still carry on the fight to ensure full equality for women. That is why I have co-sponsored the Paycheck Fairness Act so that women have the tools they need to fight wage discrimination; the Family and Medical Insurance Leave Act to ensure that American workers would no longer have to choose between a paycheck and caring for themselves or a family member; and was proud to help strengthen the Violence Against Women Act and expand women's access to comprehensive health care and family planning.
