Q: What in your background or experiences drew you to this line of consulting?
A: It happened to be a company my father started, and I actually came to work with him. I had been working with him over the years in various capacities while pursuing some of my other interests. I eventually came to work with him full time when he started the company back in 1997. Prior to that, he had been working with other outfits and doing some stuff on the side, and I was working with him in those capacities but not full time until he started this.
Who is your average client?
My average client would be a commercially regulated, for-hire transportation provider. Some examples would be trucking companies or just about any type of passenger transportation operation, which is, really, our specialty.
What is one step any motorist can take to improve his or her driving?
Pay attention to what is going on around them. If they do that, that means they are not distracted, which is a big issue nowadays. Obviously, understanding basic concepts of safe driving, like proper following distances, will help most people stay out of trouble.
What tools or methods are used in accident reconstruction?
There are a lot of tools and methods used in accident reconstruction, (including) investigating scene evidence shortly after an accident, where you would go out, look at the roadway and see what type of evidence is left following a collision. (You may be) looking at the damage patterns to the vehicles immediately after the accident and using those types of evidence to determine what happened, along with other evidence that may be available, such as information from the so-called black boxes on passenger cars or commercial vehicles, and witness statements. On top of that, other tools that are used sometimes - which aren't really in reconstructing the accident, they're more in presenting your opinions - are animation software and those types of tools to really visualize your understanding of the accident.
How can training provided by consultants like you improve roadway safety for companies or commercial drivers?
First, I think we can help drivers focus on what they need to be safer drivers and understand the principles of safe driving. From the company aspect, we can help companies improve safety by helping them understand what they should be doing in terms of hiring drivers and managing them after they are hired - monitoring them, disciplining them when there are issues, and providing remedial or ongoing training to correct any unsafe behaviors they observe.
How has the consulting group changed in the last five to 10 years?
In the last five to 10 years, we probably haven't changed too much. What we've been talking about is what I see as really our two business areas - there is the risk-management consulting side, and the other side is what I call litigation support. That's really the accident reconstruction and expert testimony.
I'm looking at them as distinct areas, and when our company started in 1997, the focus was definitely more on the litigation support aspect. Since then, our risk management consulting has grown substantially and represents the majority of our business.
