New playground for Krodel moving forward

July 05--POINT PLEASANT -- Plans to build a new playground at Krodel Park are moving forward with the design now completed and fund raising efforts underway.

A group of volunteers have been working hard for months now to bring the playground to life with the support of the city's recreation committee and Point Pleasant City Council. The volunteers have also done this at no cost to the city and as such, are looking to the community for help to finance this dream into a reality.

Getting the design just right, and within the group's budget of around $150,000, was a big step. According to Leigh Ann Shepard, one of the volunteers, the custom-designed playground was meant to reflect the community's history and culture.

Included in the design is a fort, inspired by Fort Randolph and a barn for ages two to five that reflects the agricultural history of the area. The river culture is highlighted with a paddlewheel boat. The Mothman is also featured on a stand up seesaw. Additional features include a zip line, new swings and an Oodle swing. The new playground will provide accessible, inclusive play opportunities so that children of all abilities can join in the fun. The playground was designed by Service Supply LTD, Inc., a Landscape Structures company.

Shepard also added the new playground at Krodel Park will be surrounded by a fence to keep children safe. Individuals have the opportunity to purchase personalized pickets and have them engraved with their name, a child or grandchild's name or someone they would like to honor or recognize. Pickets can be purchased for $50 each and will be sold on a first come first served basis.

Businesses also have the opportunity to sponsor the playground, Shepard said. Any business can become a gold sponsor with a $1,000 donation, a silver sponsor with a $500 donation or a bronze sponsor with a $250 donation. The business will be recognized with a picket engraved with gold, silver or bronze lettering based on their level of sponsorship.

In addition to the individual pickets and business sponsorship pickets, the playground components are available for sponsorship. Prices range from $500 to $5,000 for the components. Once the playground has been completed, each sponsored component will proudly display a recognition plaque that will acknowledge the sponsor's name or business, Shepard added.

Picket order forms and sponsorship forms are available at the Peoples Bank North Office and Old Town Insurance and Financial Services. For more information, you may call 304-593-3305 or 304-675-1114.

City Clerk Amber Tatterson, who has also been working with the volunteers to bring the new playground to life, stated this is a much needed playground for not only the community's children, but an enhancement to Krodel Park for those who visit from outside the area.

"I am very excited to be part of a committee that is working diligently to make this become a reality, which is another positive step in the right direction for our community," Tatterson said. "I applaud the committee in their efforts in obtaining funding and for their work in finding the perfect design that will provide a safe, secure facility for all children."

Shepard said ideally the volunteers would love to see the playground come together by fall but that is only a realistic goal if enough funds are received. If not this fall, it's hoped funds can at least be secured in time to build in the spring.

Volunteers will also be donating their time and effort to help construct the playground under the supervision of the design company which will keep the costs down and keep the community involvement in every aspect of the project -- a project which has, and will, thrive only by the will of the people.

The new playground will rest on the site of the current one. For more information go to "Playground for Krodel Park" on Facebook.
