June 18--The biggest ship to ever come to the Port of Los Angeles arrived Wednesday.
Big ships carrying 10,000 to 11,000 containers have come in the past, but never the size of the 13,000-container ship, the Cosco Development, which is berthed at APM Terminals/Pier 400.
The 13,000 containers held by the 3-year-old ship are 20-foot equivalent units, a standardized maritime industry measurement used when counting cargo containers of varying lengths.
"It's the largest ship to ever call here," port spokesman Phillip Sanfield said.
The ship is owned by China-based Cosco Container Lines but is chartered by South Korea-based Evergreen Line as part of a joint venture relationship.
"This is an indication of larger ships to come," Sanfield said.
