A look at statistics showing how the insurance industry fared in consumer class action settlements.
June 11--Spotsylvania County Schools Superintendent Scott Baker has a new, four-year contract giving him a $20,000 pay raise.
Baker, who succeeded Shelley Redinger as Spotsylvania schools chief on July 1, 2012, will make $190,000 during the first year of his new contract, which runs from July 1 of this year until June 30, 2018. His previous annual base salary was $170,000.
The School Board, which unanimously approved the contract late Monday night, can increase Baker's pay, but can't decrease it unless both parties agree to a salary reduction in writing. The contract also includes an annual car allowance of $7,000 and a yearly payment of $10,000 toward tax-sheltered annuities of Baker's choice.
In addition, the School Board will cover the cost of Baker's family health insurance plan, according to the contract.
"Two years ago, the School Board embarked on a journey to improve the school division with renewed vigor, choosing a superintendent who could provide the background we envisioned," School Board Chairman James Meyer said Monday.
He later added, "Tonight, the School Board wishes to ensure that we retain this leadership for four more years."
Baker left Hanover County schools in July 2011 to become Spotsylvania's assistant superintendent of instruction. He also served as an assistant principal at John J. Wright Middle School during the 1999-2000 school year after a two-year stint as a theater arts teacher and administrative intern at Spotsylvania High School.
Spotsylvania County Administrator Doug Barnes recently signed an amended contract paying him about $173,000, or $17,000 less than Baker will make. Barnes' new deal expires April 1 of next year.
In other schools news, Berkeley Elementary School and Spotswood Elementary School will swap principals. Kenneth Brown will become the new principal at Spotswood, and Robin Monroe has been named Berkeley's new principal.
The School Board approved the personnel change at Monday's meeting.
