Massachusetts Insurance Commissioner Murphy Promotes Strong Markets During Congressional Visits

Targeted News Service

BOSTON, May 9 -- The Massachusetts Office for Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation issued the following news release:

Joseph G. Murphy, Commissioner of Insurance for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, joined fellow members of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) in Washington, D.C. this week to confer with members of Congress on a variety of issues including the strength of the state-based system of insurance regulation, implementation of the Affordable Care Act, and reauthorization of the Terrorism Risk Insurance Program.

Nearly three dozen chief state insurance regulators gathered for the NAIC Washington Forum. Before meeting their congressional delegations, they were briefed by Denis McDonough, White House Chief of Staff and Senator Jon Tester (D-MT).

"This annual opportunity for us to meet with members of the Massachusetts delegation in their Washington offices has helped us reinforce the connection between actions at the federal level and the impact it has back home," said Commissioner Murphy, who has attended these meetings a number of times in his four years heading the Division of Insurance. "Insurance markets are increasingly complex and we have found that it's valuable for our federal representatives to hear from us directly about the local implications of issues they're considering," Murphy concluded.

Commissioner Murphy visited with Senators Elizabeth Warren and Edward Markey as well as Representatives James McGovern, Joseph Kennedy, Katherine Clark, Richard Neal and John Tierney to discuss the impact of policy initiatives on the states, as well as brief the lawmakers on international insurance regulatory developments.

The Division of Insurance is an agency within the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation ("OCA"). Follow the Division at www.mass.gov/doi or its Twitter feed, @MassDOI.
