The shelter purchased 45 stainless steel units in March, totaling
"It's a lot more expensive than I ever realized," Staley said.
The need for more cages becomes greater as the shelter works toward becoming no-kill. The incinerator was removed last month, and Staley said the shelter hasn't had to euthanize for space since she became director in September.
"I think the fact we have taken steps have re-energized people but also renewed our staff's enthusiasm," Staley said. "We all have a better attitude that we can do it. It's important also to note it's our goal to become a no-kill shelter.
"We can only do that if our community has a no-kill mindset also," she said.
But as the weather gets warmer, shelter staff is preparing for a dramatic uptick in animals coming to the shelter.
Staley said most litters are born in the warmer months and pet owners let their dogs out to run and they sometimes don't return. Many of those animals end up at the shelter.
"We anticipate a real uptick in intake as well as adoptions this summer," Staley said. "Every time we have an adoption event it's because the shelter is getting full."
