First Newport News City Council forum focuses on coal dust

Moderators of the event weren't sticklers for procedures, and at several points, audience members simply began asking the council hopefuls questions directly.
But each candidate in attendance had a chance to weigh in on coal dust. And there was considerable confusion among the rest of the them as to whether the city is studying its effects.
But Mabry said he wanted to see an ongoing study before taking a policy position in regards to the piers.
Teunsha Vick, too, said "the city is conducting studies now on the coal dust," adding that she would want to take action based on its result.
"We need to really not assume (a study is) being done but hold someone accountable," she said.
If those businesses, he said, are causing provable harm to
"If you're injured by pollution, you should have standing to sue," Newman said.
Newman said if an examination of coal dust's effect isn't being performed it should be.
"A coal study needs to be done to see the degree coal (contributes) to air pollution and what damage has been done," he said.
Scott's challengers,
"I used to work in the
"Spraying has helped," she said, but "we need to make sure whatever guidelines we've set forth for them now that they're adhering to (them)."
The two companies have kept their emissions below state-imposed air quality standards historically.
