You exposed many serious issues our community needs to address:
- helping chronic homeless people
- providing medical care for people without insurance (est.
- assisting veterans who have serious medical and other psychological challenges
- the challenges of alcoholism, and search for effective treatment programs
- the holes in the public and private safety net for homeless people
- the strain and cost on an already overburdened, police (58 incidents and 1,423 days in jail) and paramedic (
- the shift to addressing long-term housing needs for chronically homeless (not just in the winter months)
My hope is that we as a community will use this example as a launching point for action to address the problem's of Clifford and the other
The article's stark ground truth points out that even when families care and caseworkers, social workers and public and private organizations make a concerted effort, if chronically homeless people do not accept the offered assistance, it may not always be impossible to help them.
My sense is that earlier intervention, long-term housing assistance and other help of various forms may be more fruitful, and increase our chances for success in dealing with these complicated issues. Even though it is expensive and difficult, we must continue to improve our efforts to help the most vulnerable in our community.
