ADULT BASKETBALL: Salvation Army Tournament Opens

COAL TOWNSHIP - Tenacious D and Zalar's Roofing opened the 11th annual Salvation Army Adult Benefit Basketball Tournament with victories Friday night at the Shamokin Area Middle-High School gymnasium.

Tenacious D edged Mostik Brothers, 80-76, and and Zalar's Roofing belted the Braves, 53-32. Central Penn Physical Therapy was scheduled to play Friday night, but drew a bye when Kodack's Plumbing withdrew from the tourney.

Tourney play resumes today at 9 a.m. at both the high school and annex gymnasiums and continues through 7 p.m. All games Sunday will be played at Shamokin Area High school gym. Sunday's games begin at 9 a.m. and continue until 2 p.m.

Wagner's Gas House Gang will meet the Baltimore Runners today at 9 a.m. at the high school; #YSMOVEMENT will battle the Pelicans at 9 a.m. at the annex. At 10 a.m., Tire Ranch will play Zalar's Roofing at the high school, and Klebon's Insurance will meet Tenacious D at the annex.

James Pizza, last year's runner-up, will take on Central Penn Physical Therapy at 11 a.m. at the high school gym.

And for the first time ever, the

tourney will feature the area's finest women's talent. Sliced Bread will battle the Lady Indians today at noon. The Lady Indians will then play Mt. View at 4 p.m. and Mt. View will play Sliced Bread at 6 p.m. All women's games will be played at the high school.

Tourney action resumes Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. and runs through 2 p.m. The Women's Championship will be played at noon with the Men's Championship to follow at the high school gym.

The three-day 15-team event features 12 men's and three women's teams.

Tenacious D 80 Mostik Brothers 76

Three players scored in double figures to pace the victors. Shawn Williams was tops with 33, Eric Kaelbere had 22 and Chris Turnquest, 20. For Mostik, Dontahe Jordan was top scorer with 31, Andre Batte had 21 and Joe Britto, 16.

Mostik will play at the annex at 1 p.m.

Zalar's 53, Braves 32

Drew Balonis and Brent Forbes paced the Roofers with 17 and 16 points, respectively. Three players shared scoring honors for the Braves. Kyle Krushinskie had eight, Jon Miller and Jake Phillips hit six each for the Braves. The Braves will play at 1 p.m. at the high school.
