BRIEF: 60,000 Nevadans waiting for Medicaid coverage

April 09--CARSON CITY -- There's a backlog in Nevada of 60,000 applications for Medicaid, the program that provides medical care for low-income people, state officials said.

State Sen. Justin Jones, chairman of a Legislative Committee on Health Care, said Wednesday that he has received complaints from people who say they have been waiting three months for their applications to be processed.

"Many people are frustrated," said Jones, D-Las Vegas, who directed his remarks at Mike Willden, director of the state Department of Health and Human Services.

Wilden said his staff was working overtime and Saturdays to reduce the backlog.

Wilden said that between an expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act and coverage via the state's health exchange, about 200,000 people who otherwise would not have been covered will have health insurance. The number is expected to grow to 300,000 by the end of next year, he said.
