Ex Weslaco fire union chief pleads guilty to forgery

Cuellar pleaded guilty to one of the forgery charges Monday in exchange for dropping the others.
The deal will grant him deferred adjudication -- a way of pleading guilty in order to avoid a formal conviction -- if he completes three years of probation and pays back the money to the union's insurance company.

"They were not very adamant about proceeding with the charges," Webb said. "I did not want the case to just fall by the wayside."
Webb said the union had already recouped the lost funds from its insurance company. He added that Cuellar had an otherwise clean record and that, even if he had been convicted on all three counts, any jail time would have been served concurrently.

Sanchez, who first discovered the financial discrepancies as the union's vice president, said Friday that he was satisfied with the outcome of the case. He added that the union has changed its procedural policies regarding checks since the incident in an effort to prevent abuse in the future.
