YPSILANTI, Mich., March 25 -- Eastern Michigan University issued the following news release:
Three prominent businessmen and Eastern Michigan University graduates - Dale E. Heydlauff of American Electric Power, David T. Provost of Talmer Bank Corp. and Khalifa Mohamed Al Kindi, from the United Arab Emirates Central Bank - will participate in the University's spring commencement ceremonies Sunday, April 27 at the EMU Convocation Center.
The Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents approved the speakers and the awarding of honorary degrees during the regular board meeting Tuesday, March 25.
Dale E. Heydlauff, vice president of corporate communications for American Electric Power, and president of the American Electric Power Foundation, will be the guest speaker for the 9:30 a.m. ceremony. He will also be awarded an honorary Doctor of Arts degree. Heydlauff graduated from EMU in 1979 with a bachelor's degree in political science and communication.
The morning ceremony is for students from the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Technology.
David T. Provost, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Talmer Bank and Trust, and president and chief executive officer of Talmer Bancorp, Inc., will speak at the 2 p.m. afternoon ceremony. Provost will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Business degree. He graduated from Eastern in 1984 with a master's degree in business administration.
The afternoon ceremony is for students from the College of Business, the College of Education and the College of Health and Human Services.
The Board will also award an honorary Doctor of Business degree to His Excellency Khalifa Mohamed Al Kindi, managing director of the Abu Dhabi Investment Council, during the afternoon ceremony. Al Kindi graduated from Eastern in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in economics.
Heydlauff has had an outstanding 24-year career with American Electric Power (AEP), headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. AEP is one of the nation's largest generators of electricity and operates seven utility units throughout 11 states. He is responsible for internal and external communications and oversight of corporate contributions and community relations. While at EMU, he was a member of three national championship forensic teams (1976 - 1978) and the EMU Madrigal Singers.
A strong supporter of Eastern Michigan, Heydlauff was the 32nd Undergraduate Symposium keynote speaker in 2012. He also served as vice chair of the Eastern Michigan University Foundation'sBoard of Trustees, and as co-chair of the Foundation's "Invest. Inspire" comprehensive campaign.
Provost is known for leading the growth of Talmer Bancorp (formerly First Michigan Bancorp) from a $90 million banking institution in 2010 to a $5.4 billion bank as of Jan. 2014. Talmer Bancorp is currently the third largest bank headquartered in Michigan, with 94 branch offices and 11 lending offices located primarily in the Midwest.
Provost was named one of Crain's Detroit Business' 2010 Newsmakers of the Year. An active member of the community, he serves on the Board of Directors for the Eastern Michigan University College of Business, the RESTORE Foundation, the Community Foundation of Southeastern Michigan and the Partners in Torah Advisory Board, and is a past chairman of the Board of Trustees of Alma College.
Al Kindi has more than 15 years of experience as an investment banker as well as holding a number of directorships in various public corporations. He currently serves as chairman of the board of directors of the Abu Dhabi Investment Company and Abu Dhabi National Insurance Company P.S.C. He also has been chairman of the Board of the Central Bank of United Arab Emirates since 2012. Al Kindi formerly served as chairman and deputy chairman of the Arab Banking Corp.
