Dec. 14--Nash Health Care will enter into an affiliation agreement with UNC Health Care.

Few details will be released until Monday afternoon, officials said.

Larry Chewning, president and CEO of Nash Health Care, is expected to detail the plan during a press conference at 5 p.m.

Jeff Hedgepath, director of communications for Nash Health Care, said Friday evening that Nash Health Care will remain county owned, but will look to UNC Health Care for ways to improve their hospital.

"Our board has signed a 10-year management services contract with UNC Health Care," Hedgepath said. "The heart of this relationship and what we are happy about is that we can use the enterprise and resources from a major medical school affiliated hospital. And we can look at ways we can improve quality and patient safety."

Chewning has said their strategic planning committee evaluated this move for a year and a half. Exploring an affiliation was premised upon not giving up local control.

Numerous hospitals are entering into affiliation agreements nationwide in response to health care reform.

"We feel like we can get the additional resources to survive long-term through a management services agreement as opposed to giving up local control of our health care system," Chewning said. "Our board was very adamant there would not be a transfer of ownership."

The hospital is seeking a fee-based management system where the hospital would pay an annual fee for those services.

Nash sent out five proposals to pre-selected hospital systems, and responses came back from four of the systems.

Chewning had termed the response as very favorable.

Nash Health Care Systems currently partners with Vidant Health for cardiovascular services, Duke Medicine for neonatology and UNC Health Care for oncology services.

"We agreed that if any of the invited health care systems responds that acquisition of NHCS is their only form of consideration for affiliation, that the respondent health system will be excluded from further consideration," board chairman Vincent C. Andracchio II has said.
