The U.S. leads the pack in the percentage of older adults who have trouble paying their medical bills.
Washington, DC - Congresswoman Gloria Negrete McLeod (D-CA) issued the following statement after voting for H.R. 41, the first portion of the Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief Package providing $9.7 billion in funding for the National Flood Insurance Program that quickly passed through Congress last week and was signed by President Barack Obama yesterday:
"The devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy requires Americans to unite and help families impacted by this storm," explains Rep. Negrete McLeod. "This measure provides assistance to the many home and small business owners flooded out by Superstorm Sandy and will soon be able to get flood insurance payments underway."
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which runs the National Flood Insurance Program, announced that without the congressional approval of additional borrowing authority, funds available to pay flood insurance claims would have been exhausted. FEMA has reported 115,000 Superstorm Sandy claims would have been denied without the passage if this bill.
"I thank President Obama for urging the passage of this bill through Congress and quickly signing it into law. Future natural disasters will unfortunately occur in the United States. If California were to experience such a horrific event, I want my constituents to know that their government and its leaders will react swiftly to meet the needs of those affected. It is encouraging that on the second legislative day of the new 113th Congress, members of both parties collegially worked towards putting the best interest of the American people first, and partisanship last."
Rep. Negrete McLeod voted on this bill during her first week as a new member of Congress. She represents California's35th Congressional District encompassing the cities of Chino, Montclair, Ontario, portions of Fontana and Rialto, the unincorporated community of Bloomington in San Bernardino County; and the entire City of Pomona in Los Angeles County.
