WASHINGTON, Dec. 21 -- The Property Casualty Insurers Association of America issued the following news release:
The Property Casualty Insurers Association (PCI) today applauded the U.S. Senate for passing H.R. 1845, The Medicare IVIG Access Act, which includes provisions of H.R. 1063, The Strengthening Medicare and Repaying Taxpayers (SMART) Act and provides several improvements in the efficiency of the Medicare Secondary Payer (MSP) system.
"This is a major victory for the property/casualty insurance industry. PCI has been working on this important legislation for four years and we applaud the Senate for passing the bill," said Tom Litjen, PCI's vice president of federal government relations. "Medicare beneficiaries, taxpayers, and insurers will all benefit from the improvements in the reporting requirements in the Medicare Secondary Payer system."
H.R. 1845, the Medicare IVIG Access Act, which included the provisions of H.R. 1063, the Strengthening Medicare and Repaying Taxpayers (SMART) Act, passed the House of Representatives earlier this week. The SMART Act was introduced to improve the efficiency of the MSP system. The legislation requires the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to streamline its process, eliminating the costly delays in settling claims and providing funds to the beneficiaries sooner.
As a member of the Medicare Advocacy Recovery Coalition, PCI has worked for many years to obtain relief from these excessive burdens placed on the property/casualty industry. The passage of this measure is a significant victory to improve the efficiency of the MSP system.
