Petplan Pet Insurance, America’s No. 1-rated pet insurance provider, today announced that Louie, a German Shepherd owned by Molly Rapini of Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, is America’s most presidential pet – and the winner of its “Wag the Vote” video contest.
Louie ran away with the paw-pular vote for his nomination video, “Louie – The Best Running Mate Ever.” In the video, Louie captured the hearts and minds of the voting public with his story. Diagnosed with a disease of the esophagus when he was just a pup, Louie was unwanted by his breeder and faced an uncertain future. When the German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County placed him in a foster home, it saved his life. Louie’s foster parents adopted him and helped him work through his special needs – eventually training him to become an agility phenomenon!
In addition to his paw-litical platform, Louie lobbied for the German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County (GSROC) to receive the $5,000 donation from Petplan. GSROC is Louie’s “pet” cause because of their work rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing German Shepherd Dogs that have nowhere else to turn – a mission that once saved Louie’s life. As an all-volunteer organization with no paid staff, GSROC relies entirely on donations to continue their life-saving efforts.
The announcement of the “Wag the Vote” contest winner is particularly exciting for Petplan Co-Founder and Co-CEO, Natasha Ashton.
“We’re delighted to recognize Louie as our winner, and to donate $5,000 to the German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County on his behalf,” says Ashton. “The story of Louie’s perseverance in the face of adversity touched voters across the country, and we’re thrilled to support the amazing rescue that saved him. We offer our thanks to all the pet parents who took the time to submit videos. When it comes to pets, they’re all winners in our eyes!”
Petplan launched the “Wag the Vote” video contest in September to see whose pet has what it takes to lead the pack. To enter, pet parents uploaded a video showcasing their four-legged friend’s presidential qualities in categories like “Lobbying for Treats,” “Fun-Raising” and “Shaking Paws,” along with a short stump speech outlining their candidate’s platform. Entries ranged from official campaign commercials to musical montages – one even featured an original hip-hop song about a Maltese with a presidential name: Jackson.
