ANNAPOLIS - In the aftermath of Hurricane Isabel in 2003, many Annapolitans wished they had done more to prepare for the flood that followed.

Annapolis officials hope with more outreach, residents can avoid costly damage to their homes in the event of another disaster.

Annapolis will partner with the Maryland Department of the Environment, Maryland Environmental Service and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to host an informational event on flood insurance today. Experts will answer questions at the Pip Moyer Recreation Center, 273 Hilltop Lane, from 2 to 8 p.m.

The City Council adopted changes to the state's flood protection requirements last week. City leaders encourage residents to study the new flood zones map and consider buying flood insurance before prices rise in October.

To determine if a property is within a flood zone, homeowners may visit www.mdfloodmaps.com.

For more information on flood zones or flood insurance, call the city Department of Neighborhood and Environmental Programs at 410- 263-7946.
