The hottest months of summer make air conditioners less of a luxury and more of a necessity. In honor of Air Conditioner Appreciation Days (July 3-August 15), Florida-based HIG Insurance Group is sharing tips to help keep Florida residents’ ACs running without breaking the bank.

   •      Put a window unit in one room. Instead of having an expensive central air system, invest in a small window unit for one room. Go in that room and cool off when the rest of the house just gets to be too hot. Some people also only use the AC in their bedrooms so they can get a good night’s sleep.

   •      Use a programmable thermostat. If Florida residents have a central air system, they should program the thermostat to be different temperatures when they’re home vs. when they’re not home.

   •      Curtains are key. Even when residents have fantastic air conditioning, if the sun is shining through the windows in to their house, it’s going to heat it up. The hotter it is, the harder their AC will have to work…which increases energy bills. Hang some curtains or install blinds that will keep the sun out.

   •      Maintain your machine. It’s important to keep air conditioners running properly by performing some basic maintenance. One easy thing to do is clean the filter. When the filter is clean, the AC can operate smoothly and won’t result in extra charges on electric bills.
