June 28--Dr. David Scher, a Harrisburg-area cardiologist, isn't a huge fan of the Affordable Care Act, but is glad it was upheld. He believes there are huge problems with health care, and the ACA, while not a full solution, is a "bridge" toward something better.

"I think this is a bit of a Band-Aid, and a bridge to something that will hopefully be better for everyone," he said shortly after the decision. "If this would not have held, it would have set us back tremendously in changing anything in health care... I think if this didn't happen, it would really be a total disaster."

The part he likes most about the ACA is that it will start to bring more people into the health care system. A downside is that it "antagonizes providers by shoving things down their throat at a pace that is not terribly realistic." He believes one of the long-term keys to improvement is for people to become much more actively involved in their health care.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled this morning that the individual mandate requiring everyone to have health insurance is constitutional, as is the proposed expansion of Medicaid to cover many currently uninsured people.
