KABUL (AP) _ Afghanistan's election commission has ordered a runoff election for Nov. 7 after a fraud investigation dropped President Hamid Karzai's votes below 50 percent of the total. Karzai accepted the fraud panel finding in a press conference and endorsed a runoff election.
Obama to meet with Iraqi leader, honor vets
WASHINGTON (AP) _ President Barack Obama meets with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki (NOO'-ree ahl-MAHL'-ih-kee) in the Oval Office on Tuesday morning. Afterward, Obama holds a ceremony to honor recipients of a Presidential Unit Citation for actions in Vietnam. Eighty-six Army veterans of Troop A, First Squadron, 11th Armored Combat Regiment will be at the White House to receive the citation.
Suicide attackers kill 4 at Pakistani university
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) _ Two suicide attackers bombed an Islamic university in the Pakistani capital Tuesday, killing four people and wounding 18 as the army pressed ahead with a critical offensive on a Taliban stronghold near Afghanistan, authorities said. The near simultaneous blasts hit a women's cafeteria and a faculty building at Islamabad's International Islamic University. Its president said he suspected militants were responsible.
Vatican creates new structure for Anglicans
VATICAN CITY (AP) _ The Vatican has made it easier for Anglicans to join the Catholic Church, responding to the disillusionment of some Anglicans over the election of openly gay bishops and the blessing of same-sex unions. Pope Benedict XVI approved a new church provision that will allow Anglicans to convert while maintaining many of their distinctive spiritual and liturgical traditions, Cardinal William Levada, the Vatican's chief doctrinal official, told a news conference Tuesday.
Stock futures point to higher Wall Street open
The stock market pointed to a higher open Tuesday as more companies reported higher third-quarter profits. Chemical maker DuPont and health insurer UnitedHealth Group Inc. each cited cost-cutting efforts as they reported better results for the July-September period from a year earlier. Pfizer Inc., the world's biggest pharmaceutical company, also reported that lower expenses boosted its earnings.
Swiss court orders Polanski kept in jail
GENEVA (AP) _ Roman Polanski suffered another setback in his fight against extradition to the United States on Tuesday when a Swiss court ordered the 76-year-old director kept in jail because he poses a high flight risk. The Federal Criminal Court rejected offers by Polanski's legal team of bail, house arrest and other measures to ensure that he stays in Switzerland.
Vic Mizzy, who wrote 'Addams Family' theme, dies
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Vic Mizzy, a songwriter who composed the catchy themes for the 1960s sit-coms "The Addams Family" and "Green Acres," has died. He was 93. Mizzy died Saturday at his home in Bel Air, his manager Jonathan Wolfson said. He said he didn't know the cause of death.
Leech leads Australian police to armed robber
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) _ A leech found at a crime scene eight years ago led Australian police to a man who admitted robbing an elderly woman in 2001, officials said Tuesday. Forensic science researcher Sally Kelty said the case is the first in Australia _ and possibly the first ever _ in which investigators have used DNA extracted from a bloodsucker like a leech or a mosquito to solve a crime.
Phils beat Dodgers 5-4 on Rollins' double in 9th
PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ They were one out from defeat. A moment later, Jimmy Rollins put the Fightin' Phils within one win of the World Series. Rollins lined a two-run double with two outs in the ninth inning off All-Star closer Jonathan Broxton and the Philadelphia Phillies rallied past the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-4 Monday night for a 3-1 lead in the NL championship series.
Mathis' double in 11th leads Angels past Yanks 5-4
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) _ After 261 minutes, 14 pitchers, six homers and several big blunders all led to a winning hit by a backup catcher, the Los Angeles Angels finally handed the Yankees their first postseason loss in this cuckoo AL championship series. Jeff Mathis hit a two-out double in the 11th inning to drive home the winning run and the Angels survived a second straight extra-inning thriller, beating the Yankees 5-4 Monday and trimming New York's ALCS lead to 2-1.
