Citigroup to help at-risk borrowers stay in homes
NEW YORK (AP) _ Citigroup says it is imposing a moratorium on most foreclosures as part of a series of initiatives aimed at helping at-risk borrowers remain in their homes _ making Citi the latest big bank to announce sweeping efforts to try to curtail losses from souring mortgages. Citi said late Monday it won't initiate a foreclosure or complete a foreclosure sale on any eligible borrower who seeks to stay in a home if it is the borrower's principal residence, the homeowner is working in good faith with Citi and has sufficient income to make affordable mortgage payments.
Obama to mark Veterans Day with wreath-laying
CHICAGO (AP) _ President-elect Obama planned to honor fallen troops Tuesday, taking a short break from his primary task of mapping out his administration to mark Veterans Day. The Democrat was slated to lay a wreath in Chicago, accompanied by Tammy Duckworth, a disabled Iraq war veteran and 2006 failed congressional candidate who now is the Illinois governor's veterans affairs director.
Oil falls to $60 as China spending optimism wanes
Oil prices fell to near a 20-month low of $60 a barrel Tuesday as hopes waned that a huge Chinese spending plan will do much to avert a prolonged slowdown in the global economy. Light, sweet crude for December delivery was down $1.95 to $60.46 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange by midday in Europe. Earlier in the session, it fell as low as $59.32 before rebounding.
Aides: Obama suggested more help for auto industry
WASHINGTON (AP) _ President-elect Obama suggested to President Bush that the administration immediately provide extra help to struggling U.S. automakers, aides to the Democrat say, in their first face-to-face meeting since Election Day. Obama's aides said the president-elect brought up the issue with Bush during their two-hour White House talks on Monday, expressing his view that action is needed now, not just to help the U.S. companies but also the broader economy, because of their enormous reach. Bush repeated his position, recently stated by staff, that he is open to helping the automakers.
Palin says she might run for high office again
WASILLA, Alaska (AP) _ Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin says she wouldn't hesitate to run for the presidency in four years if it's God's will, even though she never thought Campaign 2008 would be "as brutal a ride as it turned out to be." In a series of interviews in the wake of last Tuesday's elections, Palin said she had no problem with Republican presidential nominee John McCain, but that she resents rumors she said were spread about her and her family by the Arizona Republican's aides. She emphatically denied that she was a drag on the GOP ticket.
Iraqis reopen major bridge in Baghdad
BAGHDAD (AP) _ A bridge linking Sunni and Shiite neighborhoods that was barricaded shut three years ago reopened Tuesday, offering the latest sign of improving security in the Iraqi capital despite near-daily scattered attacks. The relative calm in Baghdad remains tenuous. A pair of roadside bombs exploded in quick succession in east Baghdad during the Tuesday morning rush hour, killing three people and wounding 14 others, police and hospital officials said.
Studies: Elderly fare well in open-heart surgery
NEW ORLEANS (AP) _ Eighty-year-olds with clogged arteries or leaky heart valves used to be sent home with a pat on the arm from their doctors and pills to try to ease their symptoms. Now more are getting open-heart surgery, with remarkable survival rates rivaling those of much younger people, new studies show. Years ago, physicians "were told we were pushing the envelope" to operate on a 70-year-old, said Dr. Vincent Bufalino, a cardiologist at Loyola University in Chicago. But today "we have elderly folks who are extremely viable, mentally quite sharp," who want to decide for themselves whether to take the risk, he said.
'Leave It to Beaver' actor to show at the Louvre
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Eat your heart out, Eddie Haskell. Tony Dow, best known as the actor who portrayed The Beav's big brother, Wally, in the '50s TV series "Leave It to Beaver," will have one of his abstract sculptures on display at the Louvre. Several sculptors from the Karen Lynne Gallery _ including Dow _ will have their works shown at the historic art museum in Paris as part of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts exhibition.
Danish ace is youngest World Series of Poker champ
LAS VEGAS (AP) _ A 22-year-old Danish poker professional won the World Series of Poker early Tuesday, turning a wheel straight on the last hand to become the youngest champion in the history of the no-limit Texas Hold 'em main event. Peter Eastgate hit an ace-to-five straight on the turn and instantly called an all-in bet from Ivan Demidov on the river to win the title and $9,152,416. Demidov held two pair, twos and fours.
Indians pitcher, broadcaster Herb Score dies
CLEVELAND (AP) _ Herb Score, the Cleveland Indians pitcher and former broadcaster whose promise on the mound was shattered by a line drive, has died. He was 75. The team said he died at his home Tuesday in Rocky River, Ohio.
