August 7, 2007 – The Coalition Opposed to a Federal Insurance Regulator (COFIR) is applauding the results of a nationwide survey recently completed by the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB). The survey results, which appeared in the August/September edition of NFIB’s magazine My Way, show that small business owners oppose the idea of the federal government regulating insurance.
One of the questions asked by the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) of its members in their periodic mail-in Member Ballot on federal issues was, “Should Congress repeal the anti-trust exemption for insurance companies and regulate them at the federal level?” Results showed that by a nearly two-to-one margin NFIB survey respondents oppose the federal regulation of insurance.
“NFIB members across America understand the critical importance of this issue,” stated COFIR Executive Director Greg Wren. “The overwhelming results of the NFIB survey is a strong indication that America’s small business community and consumers seek to maintain the state regulation of insurance,” added Wren.
Optional federal charter legislation introduced as S40 and HR 3200, otherwise known as “The National Insurance Act of 2007”, would dismantle the nation's 135 years of state-based insurance protections for consumers, agents and brokers, and insurance companies.
The Coalition Opposed to a Federal Insurance Regulator (COFIR) is a fast-growing coalition of insurance companies and trade associations which oppose federal efforts to create a dual, bifurcated system of state and federal insurance laws and regulations. COFIR opposes Congressional legislation to create a federal insurance regulator which would require a massive new federal bureaucracy far removed from the consumers in each state.
